Railways in Fjelland
The Railways in Fjelland is only existing in the fantasy of the team members. But to have a common historic reference we have described the history of the major railways
Main Railway
The first railway in Fjelland was opened between the capitol Albatros and a little city in the Freja pass in the year of 1859. The line is 33 kilometres and is rising to 495 metres over sea level. The line is built in difficult terrain and it was necessary to use a rise of 26 per thousand in a couple of sections. The line contains three long tunnels and one major bridge. The private contractor went bankrupt during the work and the Fjellandske State Railways (FSB) was then founded. The line was put into service under the name "The Main Railway"
Highland Railway and Mountain Railway
Before the construction of the Main Railway was half way through a plan for a railway to a harbour on the west coast was passed and immediately put into construction. The line between Freja and Havanger is 194 kilometres and is whit out any difficult sections. The line was open to the public in the year of 1865 under the name "The Highland Railway"
The line between Havanger and Odda was not forgotten, but since the 157 kilometres line rise op to 1300 metres over sea level it was a large construction challenge. In 1880 the construction began and small sections was put into service as soon as they where ready. When the line approached the high mountains the construction speed slow down for many years. First in 1912 the Mountain Railway was put into service between Havanger and Odda.
In Odda the factory owners could not wait for the Mountain Railway and they began already in 1890s to construct an narrow gauge railway between Odda and Fotanger at the western coast. Soon after the standard gauge railway was put in to service it became obvious that it would be necessary to rebuild the narrow gauge line into standard gauge. In 1921 it was possible to travel the entire line from Freja to Fotanger.
Southern Railway
With admission to the natural products from the highland the need for a railway line to a modern harbour was more and more necessary. On the southern coast a large natural harbour with large depth of water was found at the Jomsborg bay. The construction of the harbour and the railway between Freja and Jomsborg was started in the same period. The railway line rises to 1150 metres over sea level and is 218 kilometres. The line was put in to service in 1880 under the name "The Southern Railway". The second large city of Fjelland grew around the harbour in Jomsborg and the Southern Railway soon became the most important line in Fjelland.
After the plan for the Southern Railway was passed the population on the southern coast between Jomsborg and Siljan started to work on a plan for a railway along the coast. The traffic in this part of Fjelland was based on coast navigation and road travel from the harbours and in to the country. The population saw the Railways possibilities to move the agriculture products cheap and fast to the large cities of Fotanger and Albatros. The countryside in the southern Fjelland is very suitable for railway construction, and since the cost seems to be low the plan was soon passed and the construction was started before the Southern Railway was finished. In the year 1884 the 123 kilometres Seaside Railway was put in to service. After the Seaside Railway was open to the public the small harbour cities lapse into silence and all development took place along the railway.
Northern Railway
At the same time as the Southern Railway was put into service the city of Lillestrøm was working hard to get at railway connection. The construction of the Mountain Railway between Havanger and Odda was started, and many arguments and a lot of persuasions were necessary to pass a decision for a Lillestrøm line. Since Fjelland in the 1880s was in a prosperity period a railway between Heimdal and Lillestrøm was passed, and in 1892 the line was put into service under the name of The Northern Railway.
Central Railway
At the turn of the century the traffic on the Southern Railway was at a level were delays and irregularities was an everyday occurrence. FSB put forward a plan for a railway Lillestrøm-Havanger-Siljan with the purpose to run goods trains toward Jomsborg round the Southern Railway. Electrification of the line was examined but at this time there was not any practical experience to lean against. The 295 kilometres Central Railway was built in the period 1901-1915. The section Siljan-Havanger was put into service in 1908 and in 1915 cam the section Havanger-Lillestrøm.
Electrification
The Central Railway relief the Southern Railway as planned, but the traffic was still booming and soon the railway lines to Jomsborg once again was at a level were delays and irregularities was an everyday occurrence. At this time the Swedish Ore Railway between Kiruna and Rigsgränsen has been electrified with a very good result and it was decided to electrify the line Albatros-Jomsborg. The first electric train from Albatros arrived in Jomsborg in 1925. The capacity on The Southern Railway was raised dramatic and the good trains runs smoothly again. With the god experience FSB put forward a plan to electrify the line Freja-Heimdal-Lillestrøm. An electrified line to Lillestrøm would give some advances in the use of electric engines and cut down the number of needed steam engines. The plan was passed and in 1938 it was possible to run an electric engine the whole way from Jomsborg to Lillestrøm.
